✦ The Little One ritual

The wash day that doesn't take all weekend

The difference between a two-hour wash day and a forty-minute one is almost always sectioning. Here's the order we'd follow.

How often
Every 7–10 days.
How long
About 45 minutes for shoulder-length hair
Mid-week
A light water-and-leave-in refresh on day 3 or 4, then re-braid or re-twist for the night.

Step 1

Cleanse — four sections, one at a time

  1. 01Divide dry hair into four sections and clip each one.
  2. 02Detangle each section with conditioner and slip before water touches it.
  3. 03Cleanse the scalp section by section, then rinse each section fully before moving on.

How much · A quarter-size of shampoo per section, generous conditioner for detangling.

Time · 15–20 minutes

What we'd use

Step 2

Nourish — deep condition while it's warm

  1. 01Apply the deep conditioner to soaking-wet hair, section by section.
  2. 02Cover the hair and let it sit for 15–20 minutes — snack time, a show, whatever buys you the quiet.
  3. 03Rinse with cool water to close the section out.

How much · Two generous palmfuls, focused on the mid-lengths and ends.

Time · 20 minutes, mostly hands-off

What we'd use

Step 3

Protect — style damp, seal the ends

  1. 01Leave-in first, then a little butter or oil over the ends only.
  2. 02Braid, twist or puff each section as you finish it, so nothing re-tangles.
  3. 03Satin bonnet or pillowcase at night — this is the step that buys you the rest of the week.

How much · A palmful of leave-in overall, a pea-size of butter per section.

Time · 10 minutes

What we'd use

✦ Worth knowing

  • Short, consistent sessions beat one long fight. Splitting wash day across two evenings is completely allowed.
  • Detangle before water, never after — dry tangles pull less than wet ones with no slip.

Short guides for this season

✦ What comes next

Mom is the next season.

Once their routine is running, your own crown is usually the one that's been waiting.
