Baby's first wash day

The whole thing takes ten minutes. Here's the order, the amounts, and what you can safely skip.

Before you start

Get everything within arm's reach first: towel, shampoo, oil, comb, a change of clothes. Newborn wash day goes wrong when you have to walk away.

Warm water, warm room, and a calm voice matter more than any product on the shelf.

The ten-minute version

  1. 01Wet the hair with warm water and let it settle for a moment.
  2. 02A dime-size of shampoo, worked in with fingertips — never nails.
  3. 03Rinse until the water runs clear.
  4. 04Pat, don't rub. Leave the hair damp.
  5. 05One or two drops of oil warmed in your palms, smoothed over the hair and scalp.
  6. 06Comb through gently with a wide-tooth comb, ends first.

How often

Once a week is plenty for most babies. Twice at most.

Between washes, a pea-size of oil every second or third evening is enough if their hair feels dry.
